I see my previous post was quite a while ago. I’ve been busy, so here are a few updates:
1. The Garden of Eating. This year’s harvest was variously bountiful and not so. The roma tomatoes were quick to ripen, then die off. The eating tomatoes (Big Boy, Beefsteak) were slow this year and didn’t make a move until the end of September. So the BLT production was late and hurried. Last year, I had an overabundance of acorn squash; this year, not at all. My pie pumpkins, however, went completely bonkers! I gave many away, and still have a ton. Cabbage was mainly a bust, but red cabbage flourished. (I still made sauerkraut, it’s fermenting as we speak.) SWEET POTATOES! Finally after years of trying in the hot and dry Colorado sun, there was success! Starting them early with 24/7 grow lights seemed to do the trick. Lots of onions, some garlic, and lo and behold! raspberries! And just like that, with one hard frost, the season was over, and I hurriedly got the garden readied for next spring.
2. Fingertip loss. Don’t try this at home, folks, but you do NOT want to use a mandolin slicer without guarding your fingers! I managed to cut the tip of my ring finger/right hand right off whilst attempting to make sun choke chips. After two hours of gushing blood, I had to make a trip to the ER. It took 10 days before I could walk around unbandaged and three weeks before the wound closed up. It’s still rather tingly, even as I type this. I had wanted to resume work on the edit, but it’s very hard with a huge bandage. See below:
3. Travel times. I’m currently in Oregon, having traveled in the RV through CO, UT, NV, CA, and finally Oregon. It’s my first long distance, extended RV trip, so there were bugs that made themselves be known, that I’ll have to work out once I return. We will be taking a more leisurely return trip, and of course, in mid-November, weather is a concern. I’ll let you know how that goes, but in the meantime, enjoy a sunrise in Nevada and a sunset in Oregon.
I have been writing (long hand), and will resume the edits when I have time. There are lots of ideas bouncing around in the brain, and lots of random notes all over the place. OH! and I will soon publish a story I’ve been working on for years. It’s time.
That’s all for now, from the road! See you soon.
